July Newsletter (2019)

Our Summer Program is in Full Swing!

Our Summer 2019 interns are more than halfway through the program, and they are all gaining invaluable professional skills and work experience.  They are working in  a diverse group of industries including policy, international affairs, disability, finance, energy, hotel and tourism, and many more.

Every Friday our interns return to BroadFutures for discussions and activities around areas of success and growth including time management, career exploration, networking, maintaining a growth mindset, self-advocacy, good sleep habits, and more. We continue to integrate drama to reinforce our curriculum as well as yoga and mindfulness to introduce stress tolerance and reduction. Below are some of our interns completing a career skill scan activity.

Fun Events in July!

Boat Cruise on the Potomac
We recently welcomed current interns, alumni and staff for a fun filled, two-hour boat cruise down the Potomac. We enjoyed coming together on a beautiful night to connect, talk about internship experiences, and enjoy the fabulous views of DC from the water!

Games at the Wharf
We were recently hosted by Mark Dorigan, an alumni parent and President of PN Hoffman, one of the Wharf development partners, and his wife Amy Fredenburg, for an alumni event at the Wharf. We played corn hole, bocce, giant Jenga, and enjoyed each other’s company!  Thank you  Mark & Amy !!

Capitol Tour
On July 19th, Senator Chris Van Hollen’s office organized for us a tour of the Capitol. We enjoyed ourselves and learned some very interesting facts – did you know that the statue that sits atop the Capitol dome is called the Statue of Freedom and weighs 15,000 pounds?

Nationals Game
BroadFutures interns, mentors, family and friends all came out for a night of baseball on Friday, July 26th when the Nats played the L.A. Dodgers. Even though the Nats lost, it was still a fun game.  A big thank you to the Nationals for sponsoring our tickets and hosting us for a classic American Friday night.

Intern Spotlight – Karina Murcia

This month we are shining the spotlight on Karina Murcia! A 22-year-old from California, Karina enjoys hanging out with friends, playing sports and going to the gym. She currently attends Curry College where she is majoring in sociology. After graduation, Karina hopes to start work in a sociology-related field. When asked to expand upon this further, she mentioned she would love to work for a program similar to BroadFutures.

This summer Karina is interning at The InterContinental Washington DC – The Wharf  as a hostess. Karina says that her favorite part about the job includes “learning new skills in a field that I probably would have never come across until BroadFutures and then being able to apply those skills to a field I plan to work with in the future.”

We are so happy you are gaining important transferable skills, Karina. We look forward to seeing what you do next!
Employer Spotlight – The  InterContinental

This month we are excited to have the opportunity to complement our intern feature and shine the spotlight on our corresponding employer –  The InterContinental Washington D.C. – The Wharf, a luxury four-star hotel located right off the water and boasting multiple upscale dining restaurants, a rooftop pool, and a spaInterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) is a Great Britain-based hospitality company with nearly 5,500 hotels spanning across 100 countries.

BroadFutures began a partnership with The InterContinental in the summer of 2018 as part of our partnership with The District Wharf. We currently have two interns at The InterContinental and they are both enjoying their experiences.

The InterContinental loves the enthusiasm of their BroadFutures interns, and the “breath of fresh air” they bring to the team. When asked about their experience thus far, Vanessa Peters, Director of Human Resources, said, “This being the second year that we have partnered with BroadFutures, it’s obvious they have a good understanding of our culture when selecting candidates for our location. We are very pleased with the manner in which BroadFutures prepares the interns to join our team.”

Thank you, Vanessa, for those kind words! We look forward to growing our collaborative partnership with you. More information about InterContinental can be found here.
