Frequently asked questions

Are interns guaranteed an internship?
Yes, if accepted into the program, you are guaranteed an internship. Internships are selected through a matching process between BroadFutures and the employer host sites.
How are interns matched with their internship site?
Placements are determined through a collaborative process with employers. We carefully match each intern’s skills and interests with the employer’s needs to ensure a meaningful and successful experience. Internships are designed for learning and growth and every opportunity provides valuable experience. It does not have to be your dream job, just a step toward it.
How do you approach internship placements when an applicant expresses specific areas of interest?
We look for applicants who are open to the full experience, including mentoring, coaching, training, and working with a cohort—not just a specific internship. While some internships do require specialized skill sets, many are looking for motivated, responsible young people. We strive to match interns with opportunities that align with their interests and skills, but if applicants are only open to a very specific role they may not be the best fit for our program at this time.
Where do interns live?
We do not provide housing but have informal partnerships with local housing providers. Interns who live in the DC metropolitan area often live at home, but not always. Many of our interns stay at local universities like GWU and AU. Additional housing options are available here (button/link). Families pay housing providers directly, except for The Washington Center. Apply early, and select multiple options in case your top choice is unavailable. We encourage you not to wait for internship placement—most housing and internships are accessible by public transportation.
Do your interns secure full time jobs from their internships?
Our program focuses on providing transitional work experience, developing transferable skills, and preparing interns for future careers or further education. While some employers in the DC Program extend internships or hire interns, particularly in the hospitality sector, these offers are coordinated with BroadFutures to maintain ongoing internship opportunities and acknowledge our role in developing and managing employer relationships.
Can interns receive college credit?

Yes! If you are seeking college credit, you must indicate this in your acceptance package. Credit must apply to a general internship rather than a specific area. While we are happy to collaborate with colleges and universities, we cannot accommodate last-minute requests—requests must be made upon acceptance. Additionally, BroadFutures is an accredited Gap Year Association program, which makes you eligible to enroll in college credit coursework through GYA’s partnership with The University of Montana (UM). What if interns need to miss a day?
Absences are limited to emergencies or illness. Interns must promptly notify their supervisor and BroadFutures staff if they will be absent or late. Interns are not paid for any days they are absent. For programs that include training, attendance is mandatory for all training sessions, including pre- internships training and Friday trainings.
Do you have social events and do you provide weekend support?
Our programs include in-person social events every Friday , and a calendar of activities will be provided at the start of the program. We expect our participants to be independent outside of their internships and training. While we do not provide direct weekend support, our staff can help interns schedule activities for the weekend if they require that support.
How should interns dress and what is professional attire?
Professional attire can vary, but most internships expect business casual—neat and polished, but not as formal as suits. Think collared shirts or blouses with slacks, khakis, or skirts. Avoid jeans, shorts, or clothing that’s ripped, too tight, or too short. We will go over dress expectations during the program, and you can always ask if you are unsure.
