Intern Spotlight – Katherine Crater
|

Meet
Katherine Crater, a graduate of our Summer 2019 Program! She is currently attending Montgomery College and majoring in graphic design. Her interests include Marvel, video editing, and animals. This summer Katherine interned at the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN) where she proved to be an excellent graphic designer. Katherine did such a wonderful job that ASAN has asked her to continue working for them on a project basis, which she is doing while also attending classes.
Looking back on her experience with BroadFutures, as well as her time now working with ASAN, Katherine commented, ”
The experience at BroadFutures taught me things that I may not have already known before, or had known but expanded upon. The drama sessions were very entertaining and the trips were fun as well. I also enjoyed getting to know some new people.
I had a really enjoyable time working at ASAN as their graphic designer for their Annual Report. The fact that their theme for the Annual Report this year was a comic aesthetic made it more fun. Right now I’m editing their easy read toolkit icons, as well as making a couple other graphics.

Employer Spotlight – The Arc of Northern Virginia
This month we would like to shine the spotlight on
The Arc of Northern Virginia, a new employer partner who started working with us this past summer. The Arc of Northern Virginia is a local chapter of the largest non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc shares our mission of empowering individuals with disabilities. The Arc’s mission is to promote and protect the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to help support inclusion in the community.
Larry Rockwell, Director of Communications & Community Relations, worked closely with our intern this past summer. Looking back on the experience, Larry had this to say,
“As an organization that serves individuals with developmental disabilities, we are keenly aware of the skills, talents, and abilities that these young people possess, but are too often overlooked in the workplace. As fierce advocates for expanding opportunities for men and women with a disability to enjoy meaningful employment, we were thrilled to partner with BroadFutures to “walk the walk.” We identified a set of skills and tasks that were needed, and BroadFutures matched us with a student intern who fit the bill perfectly. But in addition to those job skills, our intern also brought a greater sense of awareness of the needs, even to us. While we hope her job experience with The Arc of Northern Virginia was rewarding, we know that we, as an organization, are richer as a result of her being with us, and of our relationship with BroadFutures.“
