Intern Spotlight - Katherine Crater

Meet Katherine Crater, a graduate of our Summer 2019 Program! She is currently attending Montgomery College and majoring in graphic design. Her interests include Marvel, video editing, and animals. This summer Katherine interned at the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN) where she proved to be an excellent graphic designer. Katherine did such a wonderful job that ASAN has asked her to continue working for them on a project basis, which she is doing while also attending classes.

Looking back on her experience with BroadFutures, as well as her time now working with ASAN, Katherine commented, " The experience at BroadFutures taught me things that I may not have already known before, or had known but expanded upon. The drama sessions were very entertaining and the trips were fun as well. I also enjoyed getting to know some new people.  I had a really enjoyable time working at ASAN as their graphic designer for their Annual Report. The fact that their theme for the Annual Report this year was a comic aesthetic made it more fun. Right now I'm editing their easy read toolkit icons, as well as making a couple other graphics. "

Congratulations, Katherine, on continuing your graphic design work at ASAN and your education!
Employer Spotlight - The Arc of Northern Virginia

This month we would like to shine the spotlight on The Arc of Northern Virginia, a new employer partner who started working with us this past summer. The Arc of Northern Virginia is a local chapter of the largest non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc shares our mission of empowering individuals with disabilities. The Arc's mission is to promote and protect the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to help support inclusion in the community.

Larry Rockwell, Director of Communications & Community Relations, worked closely with our intern this past summer. Looking back on the experience, Larry had this to say, "As an organization that serves individuals with developmental disabilities, we are keenly aware of the skills, talents, and abilities that these young people possess, but are too often overlooked in the workplace. As fierce advocates for expanding opportunities for men and women with a disability to enjoy meaningful employment, we were thrilled to partner with BroadFutures to "walk the walk."  We identified a set of skills and tasks that were needed, and BroadFutures matched us with a student intern who fit the bill perfectly. But in addition to those job skills, our intern also brought a greater sense of awareness of the needs, even to us. While we hope her job experience with The Arc of Northern Virginia was rewarding, we know that we, as an organization, are richer as a result of her being with us, and of our relationship with BroadFutures."

Thank you for those kind words, Larry! More information about The Arc of Northern Virginia can be found here.

Staff Spotlight - Alexa Weidanz

This month we are excited to feature Alexa, our Senior Program Associate! Alexa has been an inspiring and critical addition to the BroadFutures team. In addition to providing overall support for the coordination and management of our programs, Alexa serves as a mentor to our interns.

When reflecting upon her time with BroadFutures, Alexa had this to say:  Over these past two years at BroadFutures, I have acted as a mentor to over 30 young people in five different programs. Watching and participating in their growth has been so rewarding, and I am always thrilled to hear about the continued successes of our alumni. I also really enjoy being able to share ideas and strategies with other mentors and our team. BroadFutures's ability to build community amongst interns, employer partners, and staff is one of the program's greatest strengths!

We appreciate all the work you do! Thank you for passion and commitment to our mission Alexa!!!
Employer Spotlight - American Institutes for Research

Our Employer Spotlight for the month of September features American Institutes for Research (AIR)! AIR is  one of the world's largest behavioral and social science research organizations, focused on using the best science available to help make the world a better place. AIR is proudly committed to fully integrating diversity and inclusion in their strategy, operations, and work environment.

When speaking about the internship program AIR puts on each summer, Taliba Boone, Recruiting Project Associate, commented: " One of the things about our internship program that stands out this year is our partnership with BroadFutures. This year we have Christian, and he's working in our IT department, and I must say that he has been getting great reviews. Diversity and inclusion is important, because it shows in the work that we do. You need people from diverse backgrounds who have diverse thoughts. It just makes the work stronger and makes organizations as a whole stronger."

We love how AIR makes diversity and inclusion a top priority. We are so grateful for our partnership! More information about AIR can be found here.
Intern Spotlight - Brad Veira

This month we are shining the intern spotlight on Brad Veira! Brad recently graduated from Kipp DC and this fall he started at the University of the District of Colombia where he wants to major in mechanical engineering. His favorite class this semester is trigonometry.

Brad was an amazing addition to our summer 2019 cohort. He worked very hard interning for Southwest Business Improvement District (SWBID). He enjoyed his internship and really liked the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of tasks, one of his favorite being using the power washer! Brad reflected on his time with BroadFutures, saying he learned " how to open up more and be more attentive."  We enjoyed getting to know you this summer, Brad, and we wish you the best of luck at UDC!

Our Summer Program is in Full Swing!

Our Summer 2019 interns are more than halfway through the program, and they are all gaining invaluable professional skills and work experience.  They are working in  a diverse group of industries including policy, international affairs, disability, finance, energy, hotel and tourism, and many more.

Every Friday our interns return to BroadFutures for discussions and activities around areas of success and growth including time management, career exploration, networking, maintaining a growth mindset, self-advocacy, good sleep habits, and more. We continue to integrate drama to reinforce our curriculum as well as yoga and mindfulness to introduce stress tolerance and reduction. Below are some of our interns completing a career skill scan activity.

Fun Events in July!

Boat Cruise on the Potomac
We recently welcomed current interns, alumni and staff for a fun filled, two-hour boat cruise down the Potomac. We enjoyed coming together on a beautiful night to connect, talk about internship experiences, and enjoy the fabulous views of DC from the water!

Games at the Wharf
We were recently hosted by Mark Dorigan, an alumni parent and President of PN Hoffman, one of the Wharf development partners, and his wife Amy Fredenburg, for an alumni event at the Wharf. We played corn hole, bocce, giant Jenga, and enjoyed each other's company!  Thank you  Mark & Amy !!

Capitol Tour
On July 19th, Senator Chris Van Hollen's office organized for us a tour of the Capitol. We enjoyed ourselves and learned some very interesting facts - did you know that the statue that sits atop the Capitol dome is called the Statue of Freedom and weighs 15,000 pounds?

Nationals Game
BroadFutures interns, mentors, family and friends all came out for a night of baseball on Friday, July 26th when the Nats played the L.A. Dodgers. Even though the Nats lost, it was still a fun game.  A big thank you to the Nationals for sponsoring our tickets and hosting us for a classic American Friday night.

Intern Spotlight - Karina Murcia

This month we are shining the spotlight on Karina Murcia! A 22-year-old from California, Karina enjoys hanging out with friends, playing sports and going to the gym. She currently attends Curry College where she is majoring in sociology. After graduation, Karina hopes to start work in a sociology-related field. When asked to expand upon this further, she mentioned she would love to work for a program similar to BroadFutures.

This summer Karina is interning at The InterContinental Washington DC - The Wharf  as a hostess. Karina says that her favorite part about the job includes "learning new skills in a field that I probably would have never come across until BroadFutures and then being able to apply those skills to a field I plan to work with in the future."

We are so happy you are gaining important transferable skills, Karina. We look forward to seeing what you do next!
Employer Spotlight - The  InterContinental

This month we are excited to have the opportunity to complement our intern feature and shine the spotlight on our corresponding employer -  The InterContinental Washington D.C. - The Wharf, a luxury four-star hotel located right off the water and boasting multiple upscale dining restaurants, a rooftop pool, and a spaInterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) is a Great Britain-based hospitality company with nearly 5,500 hotels spanning across 100 countries.

BroadFutures began a partnership with The InterContinental in the summer of 2018 as part of our partnership with The District Wharf. We currently have two interns at The InterContinental and they are both enjoying their experiences.

The InterContinental loves the enthusiasm of their BroadFutures interns, and the "breath of fresh air" they bring to the team. When asked about their experience thus far, Vanessa Peters, Director of Human Resources, said, "This being the second year that we have partnered with BroadFutures, it's obvious they have a good understanding of our culture when selecting candidates for our location. We are very pleased with the manner in which BroadFutures prepares the interns to join our team."

Thank you, Vanessa, for those kind words! We look forward to growing our collaborative partnership with you. More information about InterContinental can be found here.

We are thrilled to w elcome our new Program Director, Ashley Bray, to BroadFutures. Ashley is passionate about supporting advocacy efforts for individuals with disabilities by breaking down barriers in academia and employment to promote a path to self-determination and success. She has extensive experience and leadership in program development, specifically in expanding academic, economic, and workforce opportunities for diverse communities, including individuals with learning  disabilities. Ashley also has experience in the development and facilitation of trainings on disability awareness, inclusion, and  accommodations in both the classroom and the workplace.

Prior to joining BroadFutures, Ashley worked as a Disability and Learning Skills Advisor at Georgetown University, managing the Academic Resource Center for the School of Continuing Studies and overseeing the coordination and implementation of academic accommodations and support services. Intern Spotlight- Sam Flood

This month we are shining the spotlight on Sam Flood! Sam is a 25-year-old New Jersey native who has spent the past 5 months living in DC as a BroadFutures intern. Sam is a recent graduate of Mitchell College where he earned a degree in Graphic Design. He joined the winter 2019 program in January and interned for the Association of People Supporting Employment First (APSE). At APSE, Sam was responsible for creating email ad campaigns to be sent to all members, as well as various accounting functions. Sam also attended meetings on Capitol Hill to discuss the importance of Certified Professional Employment Specialists, along with the APSE team.

This month, Sam has returned to BroadFutures as an alumni intern and is interning with the Small Business Administration (SBA) in the General Counsel's Office, where he is responsible for a broad array of administrative tasks, supporting the important work that the General Counsel's office does.  Sam is really enjoying his internship and  looking forward to continuing to develop his professional skills as an alumni intern while also learning more about the work of the SBA.

In reflecting on his BroadFutures experience to date, Sam had this to say:  "My experience at BroadFutures has been great because I have learned to adapt to a work environment. My internship has been extraordinary. The Small Business Administration is a great place for any intern!"

Keep up the good work, Sam! We are excited to partner with you as watch your success.
Employer Spotlight-
The Office of Senator Tammy Duckworth

This month we are excited to feature  The Office of Senator Tammy Duckworth, one of our new employer partners, joining us this past winter. Senator Duckworth was elected to the United States Senate, representing Illinois, in 2016 after serving two terms in the House as a Representative of Illinois's Eighth Congressional District.  An Iraq War Veteran, Purple Heart recipient and former Assistant Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Senator Duckworth has been a staunch advocate for Veterans, and her Hill office has a strong commitment to hiring people with disabilities.

Being a highly competitive place to intern, we are thrilled to be partnering with the Senator. Our BroadFutures intern, Ryan, had an amazing experience this past winter. He was thrilled to gain experience on Capitol Hill and his efforts to work  diligently  and professionally did not go unnoticed as he was offered an extended internship!

More information about Senator Duckworth can be found  HERE .

Congratulations to our 10th Intern Cohort!
Earlier this month, we celebrated the graduation of our 10th cohort of  interns. Interns, employers, parents, and staff joined us for an afternoon of intern presentations on their BroadFutures experience and recognition of our amazing employers for their partnership and passionate commitment to the young people we serve. We are so proud of the growth and accomplishments of all of our interns and incredibly grateful to our employer partners.
GOOD LUCK to our talented interns! They are each leaving the BroadFutures program with added levels of self-confidence and workplace skills, as well as a clearer understanding of how to use their strengths in a professional environment while implementing strategies to improve upon any areas of challenge.
10th BroadFutures Intern Cohort
BroadFutures interns and employers
The number 10 provides us the occasion to be reflective and proud of our success to date, but most importantly we are grateful to our community for helping us reach this milestone. Thank you for all your support!!
Night out at the Ballpark
To
close out our winter program, we were thrilled to be guests again this year at the Nationals Park to watch the Washington Nationals v. the San Francisco Giants! We were joined by BroadFutures interns, alumni interns, employers and families for a fun night at the ball park. A HUGE thanks to the Nationals for sponsoring our tickets and hosting us for a great bonding experience.
Grant with the District Wharf
BroadFutures has been awarded a grant from The District Wharf development partnership, The Hoffman-Madison Waterfront (HMW) and The D.C. Mayor's Office in the amount of $100,000.
Last summer BroadFutures entered into a partnership with The District Wharf, serving 10 young people through our summer internship program.  Our interns worked at District Wharf employersInterContinental Washington D.C. - The Wharf, Concord Hospitality Services, Colonial Parking, Entertainment Cruises, The Southwest Business Improvement District (SWBID), and CBRE.  It was a highly successful partnership for both our participants and for The Wharf employers.  The purpose of the grant is to build off of our past success and to allow for the expansion of our partnership, as well as to provide the necessary support for the types of opportunities we were able to make happen last summer for District youth.
Intern Spotlight-
This month we are shining the spotlight on Jacob Ottinger! Jacob is a 21-year-old young man from Chevy Chase, MD. He is currently enrolled at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA where he is studying political science. Jacob spent the winter as an intern at the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). AAPD is a nonprofit organization that seeks to increase the political and economic power of people with disabilities.
As an intern, Jacob was responsible for many tasks including helping prepare for the AAPD gala, answering phone calls, attending meetings, and assisting with the REV UP Campaign which aims to increase the voter turnout among people with disabilities. His supervisors were so impressed with his positive attitude and hard work that he was offered an extended internship that will last through the summer. Congratulations, Jacob! And a big thank you to AAPD for being such a welcoming and inspired employer partner.
Reflecting on his internship experience, Jacob said,"The program's strength is in its support and help for people with disabilities. It really does feel like an environment where someone can share openly and honestly about their struggles. The community aspect of BroadFutures is one that should be continued to be pushed and promoted."
Good luck with the rest of your internship, Jacob!
Summer at BroadFutures
As we close out our winter program, we are already busy preparing for our upcoming Summer program! This incoming intern cohort is the largest we have ever served, and we are eager to meet the new young people that will be representing BroadFutures at their respective internship sites.
We are so happy to welcome back many of our employer partners for this summer and many new employer partners to the BroadFutures community.  We will be introducing our new employers in our next newsletter so stay tuned!!!

Winter 2019 Program is Well Underway!
Our Winter 2019 interns are just over halfway through the program, and they are all doing tremendously in their internships and are making steady progress towards building their professional skills. They have all been presented with incredible opportunities including developing and presenting their own research, helping out with annual galas, leading staff meetings, collaborating and training with different departments, and much, much more.
Our interns have also been developing professionally through our Friday trainings, where we have been engaging in dynamic conversations about stamina and attention in the workplace, email etiquette, networking, self-advocating, feedback, and the importance of maintaining a growth mindset, among other topics.

Employer Spotlight- APSE
APSE, the Association of People Supporting Employment First, is the only national, non-profit membership organization dedicated to Employment First, a vision that all people with disabilities have a right to competitive employment in an inclusive workforce. APSE was founded in 1988 with a mission to advance employment equity for people with disabilities.
APSE is a new employer partner, presently hosting two of our interns. We are thrilled with our new partnership with APSE! Our interns are being provided  with incredible opportunities to engage in policy advocacy for people with disabilities and to capitalize on their college degrees in information technology and graphic design.
APSE, having a mission and vision very closely aligned with BroadFutures', appreciates the value that our interns have brought to their office. When asked about their experience thus far, Executive Director Jenny Stonemeier had this to say: "We are so thrilled to have Sam and Christian join the APSE team. Their enthusiasm and eagerness for working with us has been evident from the moment we met them; and the support that they get from the BroadFutures team is invaluable. We consider ourselves lucky to be a part of such a comprehensive and strengths-based approach to support young people in gaining professional experience."
Thank you for the kind words, Jenny! We look forward to an ongoing and successful partnership with you! Find out more about APSE here.
