Laurie Thomas moving into a new role as
Executive Vice President
We are very excited to announce that Laurie Thomas will be moving into a new role as Executive Vice President, where she will add to her duties of program support and also take on a more robust role in outreach efforts. Laurie has been with BroadFutures since the winter of 2015, and has coached over 130 BroadFutures interns and participants.

Laurie is excited for her new role. "I am very excited to take on this new position. Over the years I have been so fortunate to work with the many talented and diverse young people we serve. Helping them to identify their strengths, to self-advocate for what they need ,and to tap into their limitless potential has been incredibly rewarding and inspiring. Supporting employer partners in creating diverse and inclusive workplaces through hosting BroadFutures interns has been equally gratifying. I welcome this new opportunity to broaden our outreach to serve more young people and to expand our employer partnerships - particularly as the workplace has changed in these very challenging times.

Laurie, thanks for being willing to wear many hats here at BroadFutures. We are so grateful for your passion of the BroadFutures mission. Thank you and congrats!

End of Year Message from our CEO, Carolyn Jeppsen
When I first reached out back in March after it was clear our world was changing, I was focused on our north star – innovation, and my refrain was the need to take things one day at a time. Who knew, 9 months later we would still be operating under that same banner. Yet, here we are.  So many lives have been lost and so many families touched by the many faces of COVID. Our front line workers have been operating with unimaginable grace under extreme stress and pressure. And while much remains the same, in so many ways we are so very different than we were back in March. As friends and family, we have been able to sift through the realities of what is important in life and what does not need our time and attention. For this, we are better off, spending time on the things than matter most, and with the people we love and cherish most. As an organization, we have taken flexibility and innovation to places we never thought we could, or would need to. We have created virtual training programs, one on one support programs, engaged in remote internships – all in an effort to prepare the incredible young people we serve for their futures. We have held webinars, conducted outreach to local high schools, conducted podcasts, spoken at conferences, met with our families and alums remotely to talk about the pressures of COVID, or just to have fun, and held our first ever successful Fall Fundraiser, where we recognized BroadFutures Champions across the US. In so doing, BroadFutures has continued to successfully serve our community, while also spreading the word of our mission, lifting up our national presence and building bridges for the future.

As I look back on 2020, I am still taking things one day at a time, but I also see a horizon of hope. A horizon where the young people that we serve have equal opportunities and employers understand that our young participants represent an untapped talent pool. Most importantly, our horizon is bright, because of our incredible team here at BroadFutures, our Board, Advisory Board, and ALL of our supporters and partners who have contributed in a myriad of ways to our fiscal heath, stability, and hopeful future. I am so very grateful to ALL of you for supporting our mission in the many ways you do, and especially during this most challenging of years. Wishing everyone a happy, peace filled holiday season!!

Thank you, Compass!
We are thrilled to announce that BroadFutures has been selected to work with Compass on a Micro Project! We are delighted to be in the company of many other wonderful nonprofits who have been awarded a Micro Project as well. We are excited to get started in the new year!

Employer Spotlight - EagleBank
EagleBank is one of the leading community banks in the Maryland, Virginia, and DC area. Founded with a desire to shape the typical banking style and include banking in local communities, EagleBank puts a strong emphasis on putting relationships first, crafting solutions to fit customers' specific needs and offering a wide range of products and services that compete with larger (and smaller) banks.

Their five main values coexist in the acronym F*I*R*S*T, translating to flexible, involved, responsive, strong, and trusted. EagleBank’s emphasis on community resonates well with BroadFutures as we strive to create a more diverse and inclusive community in the workplace. EagleBank began its partnership with BroadFutures during our Winter 2017 Program, and the partnership has continued robustly since that time.

Tony Marquez, Senior EVP & President of Commercial Banking, spoke highly of our partnership and inclusion in the workplace: "In this time when diversity, inclusion, equality, and social justice are rightly top of mind, it is important that we lead with actions, not just words, and that these actions reflect the correct ethos for these challenging times. The BroadFutures internship program aligns with our own ideals to build a talented, inclusive, and diverse workplace at EagleBank. BroadFutures interns demonstrate and reinforce our belief that talent is found in different ways from different places.

To that end, we recently hired one of our BroadFutures interns as a full time employee and we are grateful that the program has provided us with an opportunity to continue to employ the best talent from different backgrounds. We truly believe that diversity of talent equals diversity of thought and we thank BroadFutures for helping us find that talent."

Thank you, Tony, for your kind words. We look forward to continuing our partnership and are grateful that you were able to hire our intern, Alex full time - who is featured below! You can learn more about EagleBank here.
Alumni Intern Spotlight - Alex Milliken
Meet Alex from Arlington, Virginia for our next Alumni Intern Spotlight! We first met Alex back in the 2017 when he participated in our summer program. He interned with EagleBank in their Real Estate Department. Alex excelled at his internship and was asked to participate as a BroadFutures alumni member and intern for EagleBank again during the summer of 2018.

More recently, Alex graduated from Marymount University with a degree in Finance. Perhaps most exciting to us, Alex has recently been offered a full-time job at EagleBank and has already been working there. Congratulations, Alex!

Alex had this to say about his experience with BroadFutures and current job at EagleBank: "My experience at BroadFutures was very helpful in developing my skills for the workplace as well as increasing my ability to communicate effectively. I am delighted to be working as a commercial real-estate analyst for EagleBank. BroadFutures gave me the opportunity to have two summer internships there which was invaluable in being hired after graduating from college. I thank BroadFutures for their continued support and guidance, which have helped me to become a better individual and worker. I am currently working remotely, but feel I am learning a lot while contributing to this great company."

That is awesome to hear, Alex. We know you are accomplishing great work as a commercial real-estate analyst!

Giving Tuesday is December 1st - that's next week! The first Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year, Giving Tuesday marks a day of worldwide generosity. This year we are teaming up with The Catalogue for Philanthropy again to participate in their #GiveLocal Giving Tuesday campaign. There are many prizes for us if we are able to get a lot of donors to donate. It is the NUMBER of donors, not the amount that counts, so ALL contributions are welcomed!!!

Our $25,000 challenge grant from our Together Towards Tomorrow Virtual Night of Celebration & Support is still open! This Giving Tuesday, help us reach our goal. We currently have raised $20,000, with only $5,000 more to go!
As a reminder, you can rewatch our Virtual Night of Celebration & Support any time you want! Watch the whole event or just clips from it here.
We are hosting a webinar!

Staff Spotlight - Carole Trevey
This month, we are shining the spotlight on Carole Trevey, one of our Program Associates and Mentor! Carole has been with BroadFutures for a year and a half since graduating from the University of Virginia in Spring 2019 with a B.A. in Psychology and Media Studies. Carole plays a pivotal role in our marketing and fundraising activities through her work on BroadFutures' media plans, branding, website development, and social media. These have all proven critical in building BroadFutures' brand and presence online. As a mentor for four BroadFutures programs, Carole has had a direct and positive impact on the interns she has mentored, helping them to realize their potential and capitalize on their strengths as they move forward in their career and education goals. As we prepare for our 2021 Programs, Carole has these thoughts to share: "Working at BroadFutures has been such a fun and rewarding experience because it has truly been the best of both worlds. As a mentor, I really enjoy being able to work with so many different people with various interests and skills. I also love how I have the opportunity to apply my creative interests in marketing, whether that is through designing a flyer or updating the website. Be on the lookout for social media posts about our upcoming program and events, as they were most likely posted by me!"

We are so lucky to have Carole on the BroadFutures team as she positively and passionately contributes to our mission.
Employer Spotlight - Office of Senator Richard Blumenthal
We are thrilled to welcome Senator Blumenthal's office as a new Employer Partner!!

Senator Blumenthal is the senior Senator from Connecticut and is serving his second term in office. Both as a senator and during his unprecedented five terms as Connecticut’s Attorney General, Senator Blumenthal has fought for people against large and powerful special interests. His aggressive support for consumer protection, environmental stewardship, labor rights, and personal privacy has helped Connecticut constituents and individuals nationwide each year. We are honored to partner with a senator who champions people’s rights and support BroadFutures mission of ensuring that diverse workplaces are inclusive of disability.

Beatrix Dalton, the Staff Assistant who is supervising our BroadFutures intern, spoke highly of our partnership: “We were very impressed with the BroadFutures internship program, especially given the remote nature of the internship this year. BroadFutures worked with me and Nicholas, our intern, to ensure that the needs of the office were met and Nicholas found the experience fulfilling. The support BroadFutures provides to both the employer and the intern creates a truly rewarding experience for all involved.”

Thank you, Beatrix, for your kind words! We are glad the remote internship has been successful and are grateful to the Office of Senator Blumenthal. We look forward to continuing our partnership. You can learn more about Senator Blumenthal here.
Intern Spotlight - Nicholas Lecchi
Meet one of our alumni, Nicholas for our intern spotlight! We are excited to introduce you to Nicholas, as he has quite an impressive resume. After graduating from Bard College with a degree in Political Studies, Nicholas joined our program in the winter of 2017. With a strong interest in politics and policy decision-making, we knew Nicholas would excel in his internship with the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS).

After his experience with CSIS, Nicholas went on to receive his MSc in Political Theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he wrote his dissertation on the topic of intellectual dissidence in Czechoslovakia during the Cold War.

Currently, Nicholas is working with BroadFutures again in a remote internship with the Office of Senator Blumenthal. In this internship, Nicholas works on a variety of projects, including reviewing policy briefings, monitoring the Senator's incoming messages pertaining to constituent concerns, and reviewing documents in preparation for Senate committee hearings. Nicholas reflected, “My experience with BroadFutures opened a multitude of doors for me. Working at Senator Blumenthal’s office has taught me a great deal about how a congressional office interacts with a local constituency. I am looking forward to how this opportunity progresses in the next month.

Nicholas, you are doing such a great job in your internship with Senator Blumenthal's office. Keep up the good work!!

Our Together Towards Tomorrow Virtual Night of Celebration was a huge success - thank you!!
Thank you to everyone who tuned in last night to watch our Virtual Night of Celebration & Support! As our first-ever virtual event, we would say it was a very successful night!

Thank you to our wonderful community for helping us every step of the way, and a HUGE thank you to Game Genius for helping us put together a fantastic show. We could not have done it without you!! We are grateful to our sponsors, donors, guests, and of course our amazing alumni interns and participants for a successful and fun evening. And the best part of a virtual event? You can watch it over and over again. If you were unable to attend last night, or just want to watch it again, you can watch the event here!

We have surpassed our original challenge grant of $100,000, so every dollar up to $100,000 will be matched dollar for dollar. Due to the incredible generosity of an additional donor, we have a matching grant initiated at our event last night of $25,000 and we were able to raise $12,000 of the $25,000. We will be leaving the event open so that we can reach our $25,000 goal. If you are able to help us reach our $25,000 goal and receive the matching $25,000, you can donate here.

Thank you to all of our incredible supporters! Because of you, we are able to continue to meet the needs of the young people we are so fortunate to serve.

In a new episode of Attention Talk Radio, ADHD Coach Jeff Copper interviews Carolyn Jeppsen. In the episode, titled "COVID-19: Is It Time for an ADHD Gap Year to Work on Life and Work Readiness", they talk about the dynamic that's going on now and the advantages of taking a gap year or semester and spending it working on life and work readiness so that, when things resume, you are in a good position to take advantage of them.

Carolyn Jeppsen spoke at the Let's Talk LD College Planning & Transition Conference for Neurodiverse Learners. Her presentation, "An Innovative Approach to College and Career Readiness for Neurodiverse Learners", was held on September 26th.

A webinar from DisabilityIN will be coming out soon featuring some of our interns, as well as one of our employer partners, Senator Van Hollen.
Summer Participant Spotlight - George Palmer

This month we are excited to feature a virtual Summer Strengths Program participant from Washington, DC, George Palmer! George was an absolute pleasure to work with this summer. His fun and upbeat attitude added a positive energy to the group, making everyone feel included and more engaged. His contributions to the group were thoughtful and offered new perspectives to the group conversation. Before joining us for the summer, George had recently graduated from Kipp DC College Prep.

In addition to meeting new people, one of George's favorite parts of the Summer Strengths Program was the program's ability to make the curriculum interactive and enjoyable. He reflected, "I liked that we were able to learn even when we were playing games."

Currently, George is enjoying his freshman year at University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He plans to pursue a degree in Computer Science.

George, thank you for being such a great addition to our summer cohort. We wish you the best of luck at school and cannot wait to hear about your future successes!
Community Partner Spotlight - Game Genius

We are excited to introduce one of our community partners, Game Genius! We connected with Game Genius through the Catalogue for Philanthropy and are enjoying our partnership. Founded in 2018, Game Genius leverages the process of playing and making games for social good. Focusing on the local Washington, DC area, Game Genius offers workshops designed for teams to use games as the medium to test ideas, develop skills, and solve problems. They also offer public experiences, such as the District Hunt, that showcase the intersection of play and philanthropy.

Game Genius has empowered more than 100 nonprofits, including BroadFutures. During our virtual Summer Strengths Program, we had a wonderful time playing a game with our participants that Game Genius created, designed specifically to encourage teamwork and collaboration skills. Game Genius is also assisting BroadFutures with our Fall fundraiser, Together Towards Tomorrow, a Virtual Night of Celebration and Support. We are so grateful for all of their help and guidance!

We have worked closely with Peter Williamson, founder of Game Genius. Peter had this to say about partnering with BroadFutures: "Game Genius loves playing with the BroadFutures staff and community! Accessibility and inclusivity are two shared organizational values -- we strive to create experiences that consider different player stories and strengths. From playtesting new games to supporting their virtual gala, our partnership with BroadFutures has helped us become better designers."

Thanks so much, Peter! We could not be happier to have such an innovative and empowering community partner like Game Genius. You can learn more about Game Genius here.

Employer Spotlight -
The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers

The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers (CIAB) is a member-based trade association for the world's top commercial insurance and employee benefits brokerages. With a mission to promote their members' business growth and drive the industry forward, CIAB prides themselves on being a community of forward-thinkers, leaders, and risk-takers who foster industry-wide relationships around the globe by engaging lawmakers, regulators and stakeholders to promote the interests of its members and the valuable role they play in the mitigation of risk for their clients.

The Council joined as an employer partner in the winter of 2020, hosting two BroadFutures interns. We are excited to continue our partnership in the future.

Julia Ruiz, Vice President of Leadership & Management Resources, reflected on CIAB's experience during our Winter 2020 Program: "Hosting two BroadFutures interns this winter was such a rewarding experience for our office. Even with the sudden switch to working from home, the interns we hosted were motivated to work and continued to provide fresh new perspectives to the work we do. The BroadFutures team provided fantastic support not only to the interns, but to our staff as well."

Thank you, Julia, for those kind words! We are so happy that even in the switch to working remotely, we were able to successfully see the internships through to the end. We look forward to continuing to work together in the future. You can learn more about CIAB here.
Summer Participant Snapshots - Amonte Gwaltney

Meet Amonte Gwaltney for this month's participant spotlight! An 18-year-old from Washington, DC, Amonte recently graduated from Kipp DC College Prep this spring. Directly following graduation, he joined us for our first-ever virtual summer program. We thoroughly enjoyed having Amonte participate in the Summer Strengths Program. He proved to be a very engaged, motivated, and empathetic participant, contributing greatly to our summer cohort.

Amonte enjoyed how the program utilized multiple ways to deliver the curriculum. He appreciated the interactive component of the program, from breakout sessions to playing games to partnered discussions, which really helped solidify the curriculum for him.

Since completing the BroadFutures program, Amonte is now enrolled at Prince George's Community College and hopes to pursue a career in special education.

Amonte, we wish you the best of luck in your academic pursuits! We know you will thrive in whatever path you choose to explore.

Reflections from our Program Director, Ashley Bray

I have been fortunate to serve as the Program Director for the past year. What has been the most inspiring part of this work is seeing the success and transformation of our participants, where thinking differently is not only embraced, but encouraged. Innovation and transformation are at the very core of the work we do and true transformation comes from the ability to meet the moment. For so many young people, navigating the professional and academic worlds can be daunting. Adding in another layer of complexity of doing that exclusively online can be exceedingly challenging.

Enter our Summer Strengths Program. By refocusing our curriculum to specifically address the learning barriers that often arise in the virtual space, we were able to successfully create a community that met individuals where they were. Our curriculum was designed to enhance each person's unique journey, celebrate our diversity, and encourage us to come together as a community. One of the biggest concerns I had about a virtual program was that our sense of community would be lost. However, the way our summer cohort consistently supported each other was a privilege to witness. Whether it was in mock interviews, during our communications curriculum or when we were being silly playing games - there was a depth of honesty and trust that was shared. This allowed for peer-to-peer feedback and conversations centered around growth and development. I was amazed at how much each participant was able to accomplish because they had the support and strength of each other. The shared experiences and long lasting connections that they were able to create during the program were incredibly moving. For our first cohort in a fully virtual program, they did so much more than just meet the moment. They transformed themselves into leaders whose impact will reverberate far beyond the virtual world.
